Free Date Night Ideas

Relationships are beautiful, but just like everything else in life they are not a bed of roses. They need to be tended to and cared for daily. Challenges seem to jump out of nowhere and surprise you (and not that fun surprise with confetti – the kind of surprise that makes you hate surprises!). Even though you want to, you can’t run or abandon your lover…obviously. The solution usually begins with patience and communication and it is ALWAYS helpful to go on a romantic date together. You gotta spice it up every once in a while, ya know. But dates can be pricey and if you’re like me, you’re constantly saving for the next big purchase and are cheaper than a j ..eh, I better stop right there. If I stereotype some may take it personally and I’ll get endless hate-mail. ..but you get the idea! I’m pinchin’ pennies over here to the point where my husband and I have spent most of our summer weekends inside watching TV – it’s no wonder our relationship is as limp as those bed of roses in the desert! We need to go out on a date! (I feel like I am ALWAYS putting all my money in the piggy bank for something we need – right now it’s our first home). So when you’re broker than broke but want to plan a romantic date night you’ve got to get real practical, real fast. Good news for us, being romantic does not mean that you have to spend all of your dough. Here are five free date night ideas that you will both love!

1. Visiting A Local Museum

The majority of the cities we live in have various forms of museums. These places have photography — both, modern and vintage, history, art, etc. and some have exhibitions that are free to visit. Some museums are either always free, free on specific days of the week or free for select hours. Find one near you, and take advantage of their generosity. If you’re in a smaller city you probably already know where your museums are, but if you’re in a larger city looking for the best museum just search “free museums.” And if you’re in NYC here’s the link: http://www.nycgo.com/articles/free-nyc-museums. This free date is perfect and one to remember.

2. Arrange A Game Night and Play

This is probably my FAVORITE free date! I guess I’m what you call a “cheap date.” Ha! I love sitting down at the table with a glass of wine, yummy snacks, my hubs, and MONOPOLY or CLUE or QUELF or CATCH PHRASE or CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY! (The last one I’ve never played but it’s all my hubs & friends rave about so I added it.) Game night is filled with a little competition and a lot of bonding! It can make you fall in love all over again. I have links to our favorite games below! My husband, Doug, LOVES Cards Against Humanity and he says anyone who doesn’t have it is missing out!

3. Visit the Beach

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean the beach is off limits! Most lakes and beaches are free to visit, especially when it’s off-season. This makes it an ideal spot for a perfect inexpensive date. The long romantic walks along the shore while watching the waves crash in the ocean is so picturesque — it’s sure to rekindle the spark. 😉

4. Go Stargazing

Lack of money should not be a reason to let go of your hard-earned relationship. Just because you cannot go for an expensive date does not mean you can’t grab a blanket and your favorite bottle of wine. Drive off to a location that is far off from the busy city and street lights so you can look up at the sky and see all of it’s wonder. As you stare into the dark sky you won’t be able to help but notice the magnificence of this world and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. If this doesn’t bring harmony and romance, nothing will.

5. Free Outdoor Concerts

Ok, I’ll admit these are hard to come by but if you get the opportunity this is an awesome way to get out and just have FUN. No need to get deep into conversation analyzing this and that – you can just scream and dance and ENJOY being together! Believe it or not, these are more common than you think! There are many ongoing outdoor activities in spring, summer, and fall. Again, just search online in your city – NYC has a whole site dedicated to free concerts! 😉

These five reasons give you a way to nourish your relationship and get out together to have FUN even if your bank account shows a negative number! Date’s don’t have to be all costly; a free date can bring just as much romance and love!

  1. Really enjoyed reading your ideas thanks for sharing! Me & my hubby are married 13 years, have 2 girls aged 11 and 8 and no extra funds for a babysitter. We find late night tv is our only ‘alone time’ too, once the girls have gone to bed. Dates are few and far between I’m afraid. Things won’t always be this way in our married lives, life is a roller coaster as they say! Best wishes to the Hehners and keep on spoonin’ xo
